Mittagskogel is one of the most southern peaks in the Austrian Alps, located south of Villach and Velden in the province of Carinthia (Kärnten). The real-time video-hike was done late in the year after days of rain. At trailhead heavy overcast was present, later some fog, clearing just before the Berta Hütte (alpine hut, half way up). From then on, it was mostly sunny with white, puffy clouds and new snow at the summit. Initially, the trail follows a logging road before it ascends on a wet, fall foliage trenched trail to the Berta Hütte.
From there, and after a brief descent, the hike continues on a relentless and steep climb to the Mittagskogel summit. Breathtaking 360 degree views awaits us at the top with a shrouded-in-clouds Italy to the west, Slovenia only a few feet away to the south (sharing the border with Austria), Wörthersee Lake shimmers far below to the north-east, Faakersee Lake and Villach is straight down and to the north, and well beyond that, the snow covered high-alpine Hohe Tauern peaks.
NOTE: The (YouTube) video clips are ideal for small format viewings. For larger screens (TVs), or to watch hour-long, uninterrupted real-time videos, the DVDs offer a much superior picture quality for walking through the scenery. Perfect for exciting workouts on the treadmill, to relive hikes of the past, for virtual hiking and sightseeing at home, or as visual trailguides for "pre-walking" the trails.
